What Services / Products Does Your Business Provide?

Copyediting, Proofreading, Localization, “Decolonizing”-Language Workshops

What Values Define Your Business?

Queer Black Editing operates from a holistic framework of language and lived experience, as our work is grounded at the intersections of resistive regiolects, social issues affecting the larger world, and our own Black, queer, non-binary, womxn experiences. We’re propelled by multiple language systems—spoken and unspoken, percussive and sung; ancestral and femme energies; shea-butter self-massage; and the southeastern riverwaters of Turtle Island. Queer Black Editing is always learning alongside our collaborators and larger community, and learning within and about this vast Multiverse. We’re grateful for it all.

How Long Have You Been In Business?

Since the Spring Equinox of 2017.

What Has Been The Toughest Part About Being In Business For Yourself?

Making time for my people and for myself. Running a business is an all-consuming process, for sure.

What Was Your Dream Job As A Kid And Why?

I grew up speaking AA(V)E at home, code-switched “standard” US English at school, learned basic Spanish by age 8, and later, devoured French from a teacher whose out-of-the-box teaching methods fascinated me. Since then, I wanted to become a translator—which I did, as an adult, in various industries over the years. Language is my life. The rest is hxstory.

What’s Your Greatest Professional Achievement?

Creating Queer Black Editing, for sure. As a queer, Black, non-binary womxn multilingual editor, writer, budding aromatherapist, and movement artist, these experiences have helped shape this project into what it is today.

What Woman Inspires You And Why?

That list would be long, so for now, I’ll say “Multiverse/Spirit/Source,” who—in all of her dark matter—stay fascinating me at every turn.

What Will Be The Biggest Challenge For The Generation Of Black Women Behind You?

To act on/receive the agency, safety, and care needed to move through the world and Carefree-Blackgurl bloom and conjure new futures without being forced to depend on the whims of white-supremacist-capitalist-ableist-cisheteropatriarchal systems, which only serve to traumatize with unrelenting harm, erasure, and disconnection.
