What Services / Products Does Your Business Provide?
Nutrition counseling and self-care workshops for women of color.
How Long Have You Been In Business?
As a nutritionist - 8 years. This new project, The Black Girl Healing Project, 6 months.
Why Did You Start Your Business?
To provide help and healing for The Strong Black Woman.
What Has Been The Toughest Part About Being In Business For Yourself?
Trusting myself and my decisions, instead of getting caught up in all the noise from business courses and coaches about what I should be doing to make money. What works for me, as a single parent with no major support system, rarely matches what business coaches say are best practices.
What Was Your Dream Job As A Kid And Why?
I always thought I would be a doctor, but medical school and residency seemed daunting so I decided on nutrition and psychotherapy instead. I still get to help facilitate healing, so I'm really happy with my choices.
What Woman Inspires You And Why?
I'm incredibly inspired by Lauren Nixon - she's a food educator that I've been following for some time on Instagram. I love that she is so real, something that is often hard to find on social media. Also, Issa Rae for the same reason - authenticity wins my heart, always.
What Will Be The Biggest Challenge For The Generation Of Black Women Behind You?
I think it's the same for all of us, no matter what generation - breaking the chains that bind us, all the thought processes, behaviors, and genetic imprints left over from the trauma of slavery and oppression. It's not an easy feat since we're forced to do it in the midst of ongoing oppression.
